How to find an Acupuncturist
Chiropractors have come into mainstream consciousness, but far fewer people in the West think of acupuncture. But acupuncture is so ancient that it has been around longer than we can even know. It is usually practiced together with other forms of Chinese medicine, including herbs.
Acupuncture is different from Western medicine in that it looks at the body holistically. Energy patterns through areas of the body that are called Meridians, have normal energy flow called qi. The body also has normal balances of yin and yang energy and when those energies are off, sickness can results. Chinese Medicine and acupuncture came to prominence in the West as a result of Richard Nixon visiting China in the early 1970’s. His entourage included reporters and the Chinese government showed off acupuncture treating a variety of ailments and even serving as a substitute for other forms of anesthesia.
Similarly to any professional service provider, it’s best to find an acupuncturist by word of mouth referral. If you have friends or family who can recommend someone, that’s the best starting point. But barring that, find out if your particular state licenses acupuncturists. If so, you will want to select a licensed professional. You may also be able to find a physician (M.D. or D.O.) who is also licensed. But be aware that the regulations for physician acupuncturists may also be more lenient than what is required for non-physicians. A license generally means the person has a 3-5 year degree in Oriental Medicine and has passed a written and oral exam in the field. If your state does not license acupuncturists, look for certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists.
Some Western doctors have also had training in acupuncture. Licensing requirements for them is often not as strict so they may not have as much training as pure practitioners of Oriental Medicine. But they have an advantage in knowing both Western and Eastern Medicine. When shopping for an acupuncturist, find out where they studied, how long they studied, and how much or what type of experience they have in treating your specific issue.
Acupuncture is well known for treating pain, including nerve pain like sciatica, as well as acute and chronic pain conditions. In addition, acupuncture is well respected for treating addictions such as smoking, drug, and alcohol problems, headaches of nonspecific origin, infertility, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), infertility and many other conditions.
If you have never visited an acupuncturist before, you can expect to have an examination before being treated. The exam will usually consist of having your pulse taken on both sides of your body. The clinician will also look at your eyes and tongue. The clinician will also ask you a variety of questions about the state of your health, taking careful note of the answers for clues as to how to treat you. And the clinician may also palpate various parts of your body to determine points of soreness or tenderness.
Some people worry about whether acupuncture will hurt. Mostly, it uses very thin needles. You may have some minor discomfort when the needles go in, or you may be surprised to find you don’t feel them at all. Most people find sessions to be quite relaxing once the needles are in.
